How to Build a Great Screenplay

How to Build a Great Screenplay: A Master Class in Storytelling for Film is a comprehensive book that covers everything from plotting to drama and tension creation. Lots of examples from classic and contemporary films. A must read for beginning screenwriters.

Here's what Kristina says...

I started with Screenwriting for Dummies, but I find it a hard read. I bought Syd Field's Screenwriting which made me want to write a screenplay. After that I read his second book. As of now I have about fifteen books on screenwriting and that includes books on fiction writer's workshop, Writing on Both Sides of the Brain, Becoming a Writer, and Painting Words to name a few.

What I like best is How to Build a Great Screenplay by David Howard. His use of words are concise and direct and easy to understand. I am still reading the book together with "I've Could Have Written a Better Movie Than That" by Rydall.

As for screenwriting software, I am using Final Draft 6. It really doesn't matter what software to use, as long as the formatting is there.
